Madison Jefferson Kilpatrick
It has been passed down through the family that my great grandfather Madison Jefferson Kilpatrick left Cherokee County, North Carolina and settled in Smith County, Texas because he did not wish to fight in the Civil War, that he did not believe what the South was fighting for.  During a trip to the National Archives in Washington, D.C. I found that on June 17, 1861 he enlisted at age 16 in Company A, 29th Regiment, North Carolina Troops, also known as the "Cherokee Guards".   The company fought at the battle of Cumberland Gap, Murfreesboro, Tenn, and Chickamauga.

The company was listed in the Confederate Roll of Honor.

The Civil War was a great tragedy in this nation, however it did happen, and to ignore the fact is even a greater tragedy. The following is directly from documents found in the United States National Archives.

29th Regiment, North Carolina Troops
Roll of Honor

Headquarters, 29th Regt, NCT Brandon, Mississippi, December 19, 1863

Major James W. Foote, A.A. Genl.

Sir,

In compliance with your request, I send you a brief historical sketch of the 29th Regiment, N.C.T.  This regiment left Camp Vance in Bunscombe County on the 28th of October, 1861 for Raleigh, N.C. and arrived at that place on the 6th of November, 1861, where it was armed, equipped, and furnished with uniforms.  Left Raleigh for Jonesboro, Tennessee the 25th of November, 1861 and arrived at Haynesville Depot on the East Tennessee and Virginia Railroad (Near Jonesboro) the 30th day of November, 1861.  The regiment was immediately ordered by Colonel Leadbetter (now general) to Cook County, Tenn. to aid in dispatching a band of Tories who were collecting in that section for treasonable purposes.  The regiment aided in doing this near ______________, Tenn. until the 10th of December 1861.   The regiment was then stationed by detachments at different depots and bridges on the railroad from Chattanooga to Haynesville Depot as guard.

The regiment remained thus scattered until ordered to Cumberland Gap about he 20th of February, 1862.  The garrison at Cumberland Gap was at this time under command of Col. J. E. Raines (late General Raines).  The garrison being attacked by the Feds March 24th and April 27th 1862.  The 29th Regiment took an active part in repulsing both assaults.  The regiment remained at this place until the Yankees under General Morgan crossed the mountains below at Big Creek Gap and were endeavoring to cut off our supplies while the gap was evacuated by order of General E. K. Smith on the night of the 17th of June, 1862 after destroying tents, heavy artillery, and cooking utensils of co's A & C.  At this time, General C. S. Stevenson commanded the brigade of which the 29th Regiment, N.C.T. was made a part.  The brigade fell back to Beans Station, ten miles from Mooristown and remained in this section until August.

General C. S. Stevenson was now Major General and commanded the division and General J. E. Raines commanded the brigade formerly commanded by General Stevenson.  General Stevenson's division was ordered to attack the enemy at Tazwell which was done the 5th day of August, 1862, routing and driving them back to Cumberland Gap and _______ the ______.

The regiment with one or two others was detached under Col R. B. Vance to ________ Gap which is _____ miles south of Cumberland Gap remaining there until Cumberland Gap was evacuated by the Feds on the night of 17 September, 1862.  The command moved through the gap into Kentucky the 18th of September, and found nothing in the gap but the relics of the federal army.  They had destroyed tents, cooking utensils and left ______ few hundred  of ____ sick who fell into our hands and were paroled.  On the 19th of September the command took up the line of march through Kentucky through London,  Lancaster, Danville, Harrodsburg, Lawrenceburg to Frankfort reaching the last named place October 2, 1862.  On the night of October 5th fell back from Frankfort to Versailles, fourteen miles.  Camped at Versailles two or three days then resumed the march and came out of Kentucky through the Cumberland Gap, from there to Bean Station, Tennessee, which place we reached about dark of the 25 of October, 1862.  Here we rested two or three days then marched to Lenoin Station on the  E.T & G Railroad having marched about five hundred miles in forty days and nights.  On the 15th of November, 1862, the brigade of General Raines being ordered being ordered to Normandy Station on the W & C Railroad.  We took the cars and arrived at Normandy Station the 18th, a distance of one hundred and seventy five miles. Left Normandy, November 28, 1862 and marched seventeen miles to Manchester, left that place 7 December 1862 and marched 35 miles to Reedyville in three days.  About this time General E. K. Smith was sent to the __________ Miss. Detachment and Major General C. S. Stevenson's Division to Vicksburg.  General  J. E. Raines brigade was transferred to Major General McCowans Division, Lt. General Polk's Corps, General Braggs army.  The 29th N.C.T. was detached from the brigade and left Reedyville, December 18, 1862 and marched to McMinnville, Tennessee and from there to Murfreesboro.  Here we joined our old brigade and took an active part in the battle of Murfreesboro, December 31, 1862 in which the 29th Regiment lost almost sixty men in killed and wounded. By order of General Bragg the army fell back to Shelbyville on the night of January 4, 1863, a distance of twenty five miles.  During that battle, General Raines was killed and Col. R. B. Vance was assigned to the brigade.  General McCowan being removed from duty after the battle, the division was commanded by General _________ during our stay at Shelbyville.

Brigadier General W. B. Bates was assigned to the command of General Raines old brigade and Col R. B. Vance returned to his regiment where he remained until about the 1st of May, 1863 when he was confined for sickness and left at Shelbyville.  The regiment was then ordered to the Mississippi.  The regiment was detached from General Bates Brigade and sent by order of General Bragg to Jackson, Mississippi.  Left Shelbyville, Tennessee May 12, 1863 and arrived by railroad at Jackson Mississippi May 18, 1863.  From there we marched thirty miles to Canton, here we took the train to Vaughns Station on the Jackson & G.N. Railroad.  Here the regiment was attached to a Georgia Brigade commanded by Colonel C. C. Wilson.  This brigade consisting a part of Major General W. Walkers division.  General Walkers division was ordered to Yazoo City about the 1st of June and from there was ordered to _______, Miss.  June 12, 1863.  General J. E. Johnson commanding the Department ordered the 29th. N.C.T. to remain and garrison Yazoo City.  It remained there until the 13th of July, 1863 when a division of Yankees came up Yazoo River in gun boats and compelled us to vacate the place.  The regiment then marched across the country about 150 miles and joined General Johnston's army at Marion, Miss., July 18, 1863.  The  regiment was immediately ordered by General Johnston to Meridian Mississippi to do guard duty and arrived at Meridian by rail July 27, 1863.

On the 24th day of August, 1863, the regiment was ordered to join General Eatons brigade and proceed to Chattanooga, Tennessee to join Braggs Army.  The brigade arrived at Chickamauga Station near Chattanooga August 30, 1863, Marched to and from Ringgold,  Lafayette, and other places until the 19th of September, 1863 when the great battle of Chickamauga commenced.  The regiment was engaged the 19th and 20th and sustained many losses both day, being eighty in killed and wounded and about thirty missing.  The regiment fought in General Eatons Brigade, Walkers Division, Hills Corps.  On the 23rd of September, 1863, Eatons Brigade was ordered back to Meridian, Mississippi and arrived there October 2, 1863.  Left Meridian October, 5th, 1863 and came south to Brandon Mississippi where we now are.  Since we returned to Mississippi, Eatons Brigade to which the 29th. N.C.T. belongs has been in Major General S. S. Finches Division.

Yours most respectfully,

Signed

B. S. Croffut, Lt. Colonel
Commanding 29th. N. C. Troops.
